On March 15th, five members of the Georgetown Entrepreneur Network attended the Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC) at the Wharton School of Business.
Pedro Fajardo, Teezar Firmansyah, Omid Mashhadi, Brian Perusse, and Vishal Sandesara (all MBA '09) were selected to represent MSB in this regional competition against Indiana, Maryland, Rochester, Vanderbilt, and Virginia in a mock simulation designed to evaluate their ability to perform as venture capitalists.
Judging was based on the teams' ability to evaluate a business and draw-up a term sheet that funded the best business proposal while minimizing risk to the VC's investment.
Two days prior to the competition, the contestants were sent three business plans of actual start-up companies that local entrepreneurs are working to establish. It was the teams' responsibility to fully understand these plans, the industry and environment, as well as any inherent risks to fund the operation.
The competition began with 15-minute presentations from the entrepreneurs regarding their companies, and was followed by 15 minutes of Q&A which the teams used to clarify grey areas around the business plans.
The Hoya VC team was then given 3 hours to determine which business to fund, draw up a term sheet forthe deal, and prepare a presentation for a group of Venture Capitalists and judges.
"The event was one of the most interesting and fruitful opportunities that we have been a part of since attending B school. In order to succeed, we were required to incorporate everything that we had learned the past year into one real world application," said the team.
For the second year in a row, MSB was awarded Entrepreneur's Choice award and $500, which is given to the team with the most insightful analysis of the business ideas and obstacles
